OVERVIEW

CEMSP Oceanography program, is a wonderful, interactive marine science program for Scouts, Siblings and Students of all ages. Program participants work with our Educational Staff as they conduct experiments as part of the ongoing oyster restoration research being performed at Patriots Point.

By participating in the program, Boy Scouts earn their Oceanography Merit Badge. Weblos, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies, fulfill the requirements for various environmental badges, loops and arrows. Please visit the Scout Page for details. Note: We are always working on the program's curriculum. The input from Troop Leaders and Parents is appreciated and essential for the programs growth.

All participating scouts and students are eligible to purchase CEMSP's Fun Patch.

PROGRAM FEE

There is no charge for group participants if the program is selected as the excursion choice within the overnight camping fee. If the program is selected as an additional program, for day visitors or overnight campers the fees are as follows:

$5 per participant - Scout, Sibling, Parent ect.

Fun Patch - $3 Sold in the Scout Office or by request to Keith Grybowski

Note: All non excursion programs must be confirmed by CEMSP. Please use the reservation form or email Keith Grybowski, Director Grybowski@gmail.com. To maximize the experience, we try to keep the instructor to participant ratio as low as possible.

PROGRAM TIMES

The program is offered to groups, seven days a week. On Saturdays & Sundays, the program is offered at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm or 2 pm. Times are set a week before the program, so as not to conflict with other programs or excursions groups may be attending during their visit to Patriots Point.

PROGRAM OUTLINE - (Prior to Arrival)

Merit Badge Candidates must complete the pre-arrival steps located at the bottom of this page and construct a plankton net. (Plankton Net Design) We recommend that all other participants review and download working copies of the research work sheets.

Theater Lecture -

A 30 minute introductory lecture will be conducted in the Ship's Theater on board the USS Yorktown. Lecture topics will include and introduction of the research being conducted at Patriots Point, along with the hot environmental issues of the day.

Research Labs: Participants will visit and work at the following Research Labs

Education Center - (New) Our new education center is home of our touch tables, holding tanks, stream tables and video conferencing center. You never know what critters are available for inspection. Scout/students will also participate in various design and construction projects involving equipment used for conducting the experiments. In the wet lab, participants may conduct salinity and PH tests on collected water samples.

Floating Dock Lab - At the floating dock research platform, Scout/students will conduct various tests on the sites brackish water. Also, they will perform animal inventories of the underwater habitat research traps and trays. From the trays, students witness up close, the various the oyster reefs various inhabitants. A plankton sample will be obtained using our collection nets and those constructed by the participants. All samples will be examined in our plankton lab..

Plankton Lab - Collected water samples will be examined, using our projection microscopes. You never know what is swimming in your mouth when fill it up with water from the ocean, river, or your local pool..

Post Program Work - (Mandatory for Merit Badge Candidates )

All program participants are invited to visit and download their research data collected at the site at the SCORE the web site maintained by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources or at our CEMSP RESEACH DATA link . All information should be posted as part of the Patriots Point research site.

Checklist Program overview

Worksheet  Assists Troop Leaders in confirming that Merit Badge Candidates have read the Oceanography Merit Badge Book.

Research Data Sheet . The sheet will be used to record the weather observations, water temperatures, and various water quality readings from experiments conducted during the program. Merit Badge candidates must download the information at the Score and ECMSP Data Links.

SCORE DATA BASE Data Base maintained by South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. For site locations, scroll down to Patriots Point. For group affiliations, input your group name followed by "Charleston Explorers" (e.g. Troop 100 - Charleston Explorers) You can also input the data as part of CEMSP's research program. FINAL REPORT Merit Badge Candidates must all submit a one page report on their observations regarding the activities conducted during the program. Troop leaders are instructed to collect and submit all candidates reports as one submission. A final report form must accompany the Troops submission. Blue Cards are issued upon receipt of the written essays and group's final report form.

Please note that the written essays are reviewed to assist us the continued development of the program. We are using a new program to print our Blue Cards. Please make sure that the names are clearly printed on the Final Report Forms.
