Charleston Explorers Oyster Project Activities

On-Line Program

For the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime

Oyster Bank Restoration Site Classroom Program

Charleston Explorers On-Line Oyster Project offers an unparallel opportunity to understand relationships in science and mathematics while presenting many opportunities to practice basic and advanced skills in a dynamic scientific context.  This program is intended for the use by students in grades 1 through 12.           -The first section of the Reef was built on June 27, 2004 -

There are three stages to the program. The first stage is developing skills in data collection. Within this stage, Student’s learn the skills of data collection. The second stage is using the data collection skills in the process of collecting and the publishing of the marine and meteorological data. The final stage is the interpretation and use of the data in ongoing and future projects.

Our classroom lesson plan for stage one involves 4 levels of activities.

Stage One -  With the goal of turning every student into a Scientist, our first activity is learning how to  navigate our website for resources to be used in the data collection process. Here you will learn the scientific process used and review the history of the oyster restoration project at Patriots Point. You will also be required to obtain the Data Collection Sheet and collection protocols for the research project. The sheet will record all findings, whether obtained in the classroom or on site at Patriots Point.

Stage Two - The second activity is developed to assist the student in understanding the data collection process and tools. Using the Data Collection Sheet, students’ learn to read and understand the data collection process. Discussion included the equipment used and the importance of a uniformed collection process with protocols. The sheet will contain a list of equipment that may be used in the project. The detailed explanation of each collection tool is provided.  The student’s will have an opportunity to test their knowledge with our question and answer form. The final activity is a scavenger hunt through the data collection process as it applies to our various programs.

Stage Three - Students participate in the research sites data collection process in one of our programs at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum or by participating in our Mobile Classroom program.

South Carolina Standards Support

This lesson contains links to the South Carolina Standards in science and mathematics which you should practice and master as you read the material, interpret data, answer questions, and solve problems. By frequently looking back on these objectives you can keep a focus and evaluate your own learning.

Objectives:

·         First objective requires you to go to the Oyster Bank Restoration Page, (click on the link at the bottom of the page, follow specific instructions, and then answer questions related to the places you visit.)

·         Second objective requires you to read, interpret, and understand the equipment used in the data collection process. , (click on the link at the bottom of the page, follow specific instructions so as to download the data collection sheet, then answer the questions related to the data and equipment used in the data collection.)

·         Third objective requires you to record data, identify trends, and use this information to solve a problem.
