Program Procedures

For Scouts visiting Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, Charleston Explorers has developed a hands-on interactive program in Oceanography for all ages. The land based Oceanography program is conducted at the Patriots Point Site.  The program is not only educational and stimulating, but fun as well. All data collected is included in the oyster bed restoration and artificial reef project being conducted  at Patriots Point by Charleston Explorers and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources

  • All of our instructors are registered with the Boy Scouts and are qualified to teach the skills and materials required to earn the Boy Scout Oceanography (note: in compliance with the 2004 revisions)  Merit Badge and Girl Scout Earth Connections Badge. Both badges have their own set of requirements.

OCEANOGRAPHY

  • A Checklist and Worksheet have been prepared to assist program participants (mandatory for BSA Merit Badge Candidates) as a pre-visit preparation tool. BSA Badge Candidates will be required to read the Oceanography Badge handbook prior to arrival.
  • All participants will collect data during the program using our Data Collection Sheet. Please download the RESEARCH DATA SHEET  from this page.
  • Program curriculums vary with age group and run from 1 to 2½ hours. All programs include a short oceanography power point review in the auditorium or wardroom classrooms on board the USS Yorktown.
  • All research participants visit our Marine Lab on board the Coast Guard Cutter Ingham and research floating dock. There, we will conduct various oceanography experiments, as well as perform inventories of the marine life living within our research habitats.
  • Badge candidates and those that wish to assist, will build oyster collection bags and artificial reef containers to be used in the construction of the oyster bed and artificial reefs at Patriots Point.
  • All information collected is submitted to Charleston Explorers by each participating troop in a final report submitted for inclusion in the Oyster Restoration Project begin conducted at Patriots Point.  FINAL REPORT Blue cards are issued upon receipt of the final report.
  • All research data and observations are to be downloaded to WATER QUALITY MONITORING PAGE located at the SCORE DATA BASE For site locations, scroll down to Patriots Point. For group affiliations, input your group name followed by "Charleston Explorers" (e.g. Troop 100 - Charleston Explorers)
  • Programs are available weekends and during the week during the months of May through August. Scheduling is flexible on weekends, however they may not start until 10:00 am and must end by 4:00 pm; weekday programs run from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Special times during the week can be scheduled during the week based on Counselor availability.
