For Girl Scouts, the program meets the requirements of the Water Wonders, Sea To Shore, and ECO Action Patches.

General

Program Description

The main focus of the program is the study of Oceanography through the exploration of Patriots Point's estuarine environment habitat. Using the Socratic method of teaching, Instructors discuss with various current environmental issues such as Climate Change, job opportunities in Oceanography and the scientific projects being conducted by the staff. Our hands on scientific programs include inventories of the sites artificial habitats. Common inhabitants often include various members of the Crab and Shrimp families, some the most commercially important shellfish on the east coast and. Scouts will learn all about a blue crab, oyster and shrimp's life cycles, anatomies, and harvesting regulations. Instructors will explain how fresh and salt water determines the type of vegetation and animals that are found in these areas. Using a stream table, Scouts will learn how the natural environment repairs itself after disasters, such as hurricanes, and what we humans do to either help or hinder the process. A census of the different types of animals and fauna witnessed during the program will be compiled and the staff instructor will lead a discussion on how some of these animals and fauna may be negatively impacted by the actions of humans and natural disasters. Scouts will also pull a plankton net sample, to be explored using our projection microscope in the lab on board the USS Yorktown. There, Scouts will discover some of the smallest members of the marsh and ocean food webs. Water samples will be obtained and used to test for pH and salinity levels in the lab on board the US Coast Guard Cutter Ingham. All scientific data collected is recorded by group leaders to be inputted later by the Scouts in data collection sites operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the NOOA. Scouts will work with the staff instructors for a behind the scenes access and hands on experiences in assisting our Instructors take care of the animals living at the site. Additional discussions will be including contrast of the flora and fauna found in the estuarine environment. Scouts will learn how the plants help to purify the water.
